After 19 years of spectacular leadership, Dr. Steven B. Sample will be stepping down as USC's 10th president, effective August 2, 2010. He will take a yearlong sabbatical before resuming his teaching and research work as a tenured member of the faculty of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. Widely regarded as one of America's best university presidents, he has taken USC farther faster than any other university in the country. A patent-holding electrical engineer, an inspiring teacher, and the author of the best-selling Contrarian's Guide to Leadership, Dr. Sample directed USC's emergence as a world leader in communication, multimedia technologies, and the life sciences; solidified the university's stature as one of the nation's leading research universities; and advanced its presence and influence as a global university that enrolls more international students and has more international alumni than any other American university.
